How the Steps Equivalent Is Calculated

This calculator uses two simple equations. First, calories burned are estimated with the standard MET method:

Calories = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200 × minutes

MET stands for metabolic equivalent; 1 MET is your resting metabolic rate, while 4.5 MET means you are burning 4.5 times your resting rate. Bodyboarding is an intermittent activity, so the MET value depends on how much time you spend paddling hard versus gliding on a wave.

Second, the calorie burn is converted into a step equivalent. Your calories per step are estimated from the energy cost of walking:

Calories per step = (0.57 × body weight in pounds) ÷ steps per mile

The 0.57 figure is a widely used estimate of the calories burned per pound of body weight per mile walked. Steps per mile is calculated from your stride length:

Steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ stride length (inches)

Finally, steps equivalent = calories burned ÷ calories per step. The result tells you how many walking steps would produce the same energy expenditure as your bodyboarding session.

Scenario: A 165 lb rider spends 40 minutes bodyboarding at moderate intensity (MET 4.5) with a 30-inch stride.

Steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ 30 = 2,112
