The Math Behind It
This tool uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) system to estimate how much energy a stretching session requires. One MET is roughly your resting energy expenditure. Light stretching sits around 2.3 MET, moderate dynamic stretching around 2.8 MET, and vigorous or power yoga around 3.5 MET.
The calorie estimate uses the standard formula: Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200 × minutes. For example, moderate stretching at 2.8 MET for 30 minutes for a 70 kg person gives 2.8 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 × 30 = 102.9 kcal.
To convert those calories into steps, we assume walking at a comfortable pace of about 100 steps per minute burns roughly 0.0006 kcal per kilogram of body weight per step — about 0.042 kcal per step for a 70 kg person. This is a widely used energy-based estimate, not a biomechanical measurement. The conversion is: Steps = calories ÷ (0.0006 × weight in kg).
A neat consequence is that body weight cancels out. Both the calorie formula and the per-step formula include weight, so the simplified shortcut becomes Steps ≈ MET × minutes × 29.2.
