Build a taco and see its estimated calories and macros in seconds. This Taco Calorie Calculator lets you choose your tortilla, protein, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and toppings, then instantly totals calories, protein, carbs, and fat for your whole plate or a single taco.
Perfect for taco nights, meal prep, and casual calorie tracking, this tool works for street-style corn tacos, loaded burrito-sized flour tortillas, hard shells, and everything in between. It uses standard USDA-based nutrition values for common ingredients, so estimates are practical for everyday decisions without being overly precise.
Use it to compare protein options, trim calories from toppings, or simply stay informed about what goes into your favorite taco. Whether you're counting macros or just curious, it's a fast, easy starting point.

Step-by-Step Guide
Using the calculator is straightforward:
- Choose your tortilla. Select a corn tortilla, a small or large flour tortilla, or a crispy hard shell, then enter how many tacos you are making.
- Add your protein. Pick from ground beef, turkey, chicken, carnitas, steak, shrimp, or refried beans, and enter the amount in grams or ounces.
- Add extras. Enter the cheese amount in ounces or grams, then add sour cream and guacamole in tablespoons. Toggle your toppings with the checkboxes.
- Calculate. Press the Calculate button to see total calories, protein, carbs, and fat, plus a per-taco figure and an itemized breakdown.
Tip: The preset buttons (Street Taco, Chicken Soft, Loaded Beef) are quick starting points. Adjust them to match your actual portion sizes.
How the Totals Are Calculated
Every ingredient has a calorie-per-unit value and a macro profile based on standard USDA nutrition data. The calculator multiplies each amount you enter by those values:
Calories from a component = amount × calories per unit
For example, ground beef is entered as about 254 kcal per 100 grams. Entering 3 ounces (about 85 g) gives 85 × 254 ÷ 100 ≈ 216 kcal. Cheese is handled per ounce, and sour cream and guacamole are handled per tablespoon.
The total is simply the sum of all components. The macro totals work the same way: each component contributes protein, carbohydrates, and fat in grams, and those grams are added separately before being displayed.
When you enter more than one tortilla, the calculator also divides the final totals by the number of tortillas to show a per-taco estimate. This is especially useful when you are building a batch of street tacos or a meal for several people.
Worked Example: Two Street Tacos
Setup: 2 corn tortillas, 100 g carnitas, 20 g shredded cheddar, 1 tbsp guacamole, salsa, and onion/cilantro.
- Corn tortillas: 2 × 52 = 104 kcal
- Carnitas: 100 g × 240 kcal/100 g = 240 kcal
- Cheddar: 20 g ÷ 28 × 110 ≈ 79 kcal
- Guacamole: 1 tbsp = 25 kcal
- Salsa: 15 kcal; onion/cilantro ≈ 3 kcal
Total: 466 kcal. Per taco: 233 kcal. This is a realistic, satisfying street-taco meal that still fits easily into a moderate calorie budget.
Tips for Building a Lower-Calorie Taco
- Choose corn tortillas. A 6-inch corn tortilla has about 52 kcal, while a large flour tortilla can add 140–210 kcal before any filling.
- Watch your cheese portion. One ounce of shredded cheddar is about 110 kcal. Using 0.5 oz instead saves roughly 55 kcal per taco.
- Use salsa instead of sour cream. A tablespoon of salsa is about 5–15 kcal, while a tablespoon of sour cream is about 30 kcal and guacamole about 25 kcal.
- Leaner proteins help. Chicken or shrimp are significantly lower in calories and fat than ground beef or carnitas for the same gram weight.
- Load up on volume toppings. Lettuce, fresh tomato, onion, and cilantro add flavor and texture for very few calories.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this calculator? Values are based on generic USDA-style nutrition profiles for common ingredients. Actual brand, preparation method, and portion size will make results vary, sometimes by 10–20%. Use the estimates as a planning tool, not a medical statement.
Why does protein from ground beef show 17 g per 100 g? Because that value is for 80/20 beef. Leaner ground sirloin or turkey will have more protein and less fat. The calculator uses a representative standard value; you can adjust the amount or choose a different protein to fit your goals.
Can I use this for meal prep? Yes. For meal prep, weigh your cooked proteins and account for shells or toppings, then use the per-taco figure to portion out your containers. For more detailed data, check the USDA FoodData Central database for specific products.
What about rice, beans, and extra fillings? This version covers the most common taco components. To include rice or other additions, estimate their calories separately and mentally add them to the total.
